Menomonee Falls Natural History

In a recent talk to Friends of Lime Kiln Park Natural Area, “Being Like Increase Lapham”, I developed some images from the State Historical Society GLO land survey records, overlaying modern roads and aerials. Left, the original township survey, overlayed with LKPNA and section lines and trails that became roads; middle, overlayed with Finley’s pre-settlement vegetation map developed from these surveys; right, the trees surveyed. Notice in all the dominant tamarack swamp nearby (which straddles the subcontinental divide, seen in shading in the left image), and the well-known Falls (dropping 40-some feet in 3/8 mile).
